South African Airways (SAA) is the national airline of South Africa, with its head office in Johannesburg. The airline was founded in 1934 as South African Airways Corporation (SAAcorp), but changed to its current name in 2001. It is a member of the Star Alliance.
The airline operates from three main hubs: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. It has a total fleet size of 103 aircraft, which include Airbus A319s, A320s, A340-300s and Boeing 737-800s. In addition to its domestic services, SAA also operates international flights to numerous destinations around the world.
The airline commenced operations in the United Kingdom in 1968, when it commenced a service between London Heathrow and Johannesburg. Since then, SAA has expanded its operations to include a number of other destinations in Europe. In November 2014, the airline announced that it would be suspending its services from London to Johannesburg and Durban, citing weak demand and high operating costs as the reasons for doing so.
